Wayne Rooney remains high on Birmingham\u2019s list of possible managers should John Eustace ever leave the club.<\/p>\n
The former England captain has now left his role as manager of Major League Soccer club DC United and retains strong connections in the English game.<\/p>\n
Eustace\u2019s stock is on the rise after leading Birmingham – co-owned by NFL great Tom Brady – to sixth in the Championship after 11 games.<\/p>\n
The 43-year-old took charge in summer 2022 and led the club to comfortable survival against a backdrop of financial uncertainty.<\/p>\n
He has now overseen a promising opening to the first season under the club’s American owners. Birmingham are sixth in the Championship heading into the international break, though Eustace has yet to be offered a new deal with his current contract expiring in 2025.<\/p>\n

The new ownership group includes Brady and the seven-time Super Bowl winner attended the home game against Leeds in August.<\/p>\n
Rooney announced his departure from Washington overnight. He said: ‘I think it\u2019s just the right time. I\u2019ve done everything I can to try and get the club into the playoffs.\u00a0<\/p>\n
‘It\u2019s not been a single thing which has happened. It\u2019s about timing in your career. I\u2019ve really enjoyed my time here. I\u2019ve had a lot of great help from the owners…\u00a0<\/p>\n
‘I just feel like it\u2019s the right time for me to go back to England, first to obviously see my family. I haven\u2019t seen them for a long time.<\/p>\n
‘And then, what lies ahead? Whether opportunities come up? I\u2019ve seen a lot of reports in the media. I don\u2019t have anything lined up.<\/p>\n
‘I\u2019m going back there to see my family. If something comes up in October, November, of course I\u2019ll look at it.’<\/p>\n
