Scott McTominay has shed light on what Erik ten Hag told him before coming on to rescue Manchester United against Brentford. The midfielder bagged two goals in injury time to seal a 2-1 comeback win and send the Red Devils into the international break on a high.

McTominay turned out to be the unlikely hero for United, who were heading towards a fourth consecutive home defeat under Ten Hag. Mathias Jensen put Brentford one up at Old Trafford, with his first-half finish looking likely to decide the contest until the dying embers.

Brought on from the bench in the 87th minute, McTominay single-handedly turned the Red Devils’ fortunes around with a quick-fire double gave Ten Hag some much-needed breathing room.

When asked what the manager had told him before being thrown into the action, McTominay said: “It was very loud, the fans were roaring us on so I couldn’t hear fully.

When the ball dropped to me [for the first goal] it was at an awwkard height and I didn’t think I could get my leg there, control it and score.

“As I said, we wanted to get into their box more as the game went on. But they are a really good team, defended well, and are dangerous on the counterattack. Eventually we got the goals. Ten Hag’s side now have a two-week break from domestic action before a trip to face Sheffield United on October 21, where they will once again aim to put their poor start to the campaign behind them.

“Everyone knows we are in a difficult period at the minute, but we have fighters in the group that want to keep going right until the end,” McTominay continued. “It could have been anyone on that pitch scoring the two goals. Really pleased and hopefully we can build on that from here.

“Sometimes we feel like we are in our own bubble with people outside only saying negative things, but we just have to block that out and be better after the international break.”
