JJ Watt, an NFL great and now a minority owner of Burnley, believes Erik ten Hag’s public row with Jadon Sancho indicates deep issues behind the scenes at Manchester United.

Sancho has been exiled after accusing Ten Hag of lying about the reasons behind his absence at Arsenal on September 3. United lost that game 3-1 and Sancho swiftly posted a statement on social media in defiance of his coach after Ten Hag said the winger hadn’t trained well enough.

United then released a statement saying Sancho would be training alone due to a discipline issue and Ten Hag later said that there was ‘no good culture’ at the club when he took over last year.

Watt, who is enjoying his first season involved in Burnley’s ownership, offered his own theories about the mood at the club after an 11-year NFL career with the Houston Texans and Arizona Cardinals.

Speaking on NBC Sports, he said: ‘You look at the Jadon situation right now, it gets talked about (in the locker room), you can’t just ignore it. The way that has played out so publicly, there has to be something going on behind the scenes there.

‘To have a coach speak so openly about that situation means he has tried many different ways behind the scenes and it hasn’t worked.

‘It happens a little bit (in the NFL) but like I said, if it gets to a point where the coach is speaking publicly, that means everything has gone on behind the scenes, people have had those conversations, and now it has boiled up to a whole new high.’

Watt, 34, believes the United team is lacking cohesion this season, after three wins from eight league games and two losses in the Champions League.

‘You have the allure and everything to bring in the greatest players in the world – it all comes down to it all gelling together,’ Watt said.

‘That seems to be a little bit of the issue, the chemistry of the team. But I’m also sitting here as a guy who lost 1-0 to them a couple of weeks ago!’

When asked why Sancho was not selected for Manchester United’s clash with Arsenal at the time of the fixture, Ten Hag said: ‘Jadon, on his performances in training we did not select him.’

Sancho was furious with Ten Hag’s comments and took to social media to say: ‘Please don’t believe everything you read! I will not allow people to say things that are completely untrue. I have conducted myself in training very well this week.

‘I believe there are other reasons for this matter that I won’t go into, I’ve been a scapegoat for a long time which isn’t fair!

‘All I want to do is play football with a smile on my face and contribute to the team. I respect all decisions that are made by the coaching staff, I play with fantastic players and I am grateful to do so, which I know every week is a challenge. I will continue to fight for this badge no matter what!’

United plays Brentford at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon, while Watt’s Burnley team host Chelsea.

Burnley is 17th at present, a place outside of the Premier League relegation zone.
