a Man United statement read.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Lady Cathy was a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother, and a tower of strength for Sir Alex throughout his career.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/10\/06\/15\/76251085-12602515-image-a-29_1696602143667.jpg\" height=\"503\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Lady Cathy Ferguson, wife of Sir Alex Ferguson, has died, the family has announced<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/10\/06\/15\/76250523-12602515-Lady_Cathy_Ferguson_wife_of_Sir_Alex_Ferguson_has_died_the_famil-a-32_1696603051616.jpg\" height=\"945\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Lady Cathy had been married to Sir Alex since 1966, who described her as his bedrock<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/10\/06\/16\/76252967-12602515-image-a-34_1696605501819.jpg\" height=\"146\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Manchester United issued an emotional tribute on social media following Lady Cathy&#8217;s death<\/p>\n<p>Flags will be lowered to half-mast at Old Trafford in tribute to Lady Cathy.<\/p>\n<p>Man United&#8217;s men&#8217;s team will wear black armbands during their Premier League match with Brentford on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>The women&#8217;s team will wear black armbands for Friday evening&#8217;s WSL match against Arsenal.<\/p>\n<p>Lady Cathy had been by her husband&#8217;s side as he became one of the greatest manager&#8217;s in football history, winning\u00a049 trophies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At Manchester United alone he won 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups and lifted the Champions League on two occasions.<\/p>\n<p>In 2002, Lady Cathy had been instrumental in convincing Ferguson to reverse his decision to retire at that point.<\/p>\n<p>He went on to manage the club for a further 11 years before eventually calling time after the death of Cathy&#8217;s sister.<\/p>\n<p>When he announced his retirement as United manager in 2013 after an unprecedented period of success for the Red Devils, Sir Alex said: &#8216;My wife Cathy has been the key figure throughout my career, providing a bedrock of both stability and encouragement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Words are not enough to express what this has meant to me.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/10\/06\/15\/76251217-12602515-The_Glaswegian_mother_of_three_and_grandmother_to_12_was_describ-a-31_1696603037566.jpg\" height=\"837\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Man United will lower flags to half-mast at Old Trafford in tribute to Lady Cathy<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/10\/06\/15\/76251203-12602515-The_Fergusons_centre_during_the_UEFA_Champions_League_final_betw-a-33_1696603890349.jpg\" height=\"365\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>The Fergusons (centre)\u00a0during the UEFA Champions League final between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid in Milan in 2016\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sir Alex also described her as the only person in the world he did not answer back to.<\/p>\n<p>Lady Cathy had been married to Sir Alex since 1966, with the couple having met while they were both working at a typewriter factory in Glasgow.<\/p>\n<p>At the time the city was divided by sectarianism &#8211; Lady Cathy was a Catholic while Sir Alex was Protestant &#8211; but the then footballer was following the example of his father, who himself had &#8216;broken a taboo&#8217; by marrying a Catholic woman.<\/p>\n<p>Interviewed in a documentary called Sir Alex Ferguson: Never Give In released in 2021 Cathy revealed Sir Alex had taken her to the cinema on their first date.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;He bought me a box of liquorice allsorts at the movies, of which he ate all of them, and a local paper when we came out. That was my romantic day.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;We got married in Glasgow registry office in 1966 and that was the start.
