England forward Teddy Sheringham wanted to take David Beckham's iconic free-kick against Greece away from him.

The Three Lions needed a point against Greece on October 6, 2001 to qualify for the World Cup a year later. England were 2-1 down in stoppage time, with their dreams of qualification on the verge of collapse when Sheringham was fouled 30 yards from goal.

Captain Beckham was involved in everything England had done up to that point, though he had blazed several of his trademark free-kicks high and wide. That prompted his former Manchester United team-mate Sheringham to offer to take the final set-piece with the World Cup on the line – but Beckham wasn’t having any of it as he gave a brutal response instead.

Speaking to Ladbrokes Fanzone, Sheringham recalled: “I'd already scored to make it 1-1 in the game, so I was buzzing. I felt ten feet tall, and I'd won the free-kick late on in the game, making the most of a shove from the defender.

“Becks had probably had five or six free-kicks in that game, and they'd gone all over the place; he'd hit the wall, he'd hit Row Z, so when we got the last one I actually said to him ‘Becks, I'll have this one.’

“He just said ‘Go away, Ted. You can't even reach from here.’ He had a point. I'd scored the odd free-kick in my career but I saw Becks on a daily basis practising so I knew he was better.

“If you had to put money on someone putting the ball in the top corner in the last minute of a game, you'd put it on him. He told me to go away in the most polite way he could think of at the time.”

Beckham’s confidence in his own ability was justified in the end as he stepped up and majestically curled the ball into the top left-hand corner, sending England to the World Cup. The goal sparked wild scenes at Wembley and has gone down as one of the most iconic moments in the national team's history.

For Beckham, it marked a moment of redemption as he was finally forgiven by fans for kicking out at Diego Simeone during the clash with Argentina at the 1998 World Cup, where he was sent off and received widespread abuse.
