Chelsea fans are concerned that boss Mauricio Pochettino has ‘jinxed’ Mykhailo Mudryk after he gifted the Blues winger a copy of his book from his Tottenham Hotspur days.

Pochettino returned to English football at the beginning of the season to replace Graham Potter as Chelsea’s latest permanent manager and the club’s third since Todd Boehly took control of the club last year. The Argentine previously managed Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur across seven years in England before a spell in charge of PSG.

The 51-year-old boss led an attacking and exciting Spurs team between 2014 and 2019, but he was unable to land a trophy and following a poor start to the 2018/19 season – he was sacked. And Chelsea fans are now concerned that he’s brought his ‘Spurs curse’ to Chelsea after giving Mudryk an ‘odd’ gift.

Pochettino posed alongside Mudryk, who ended his wait for his first Chelsea goal on Monday in the Blues' 2-0 away win against Fulham, with the pair holding a copy of Poch’s book “Brave New World – Inside Pochettino’s Spurs,” which was released in 2017.

Fans took to Twitter as they reacted to the gesture from Pochettino, with one saying: Such an odd gift, but maybe it helps him out.” A second added: “Mudryk and Pochettino is what we thought Mount and Lampard would become!”

But some Chelsea fans were left perplexed by the gift, hoping that the ‘Spurs trophy curse’ wouldn’t now 'jinx' the Blues as well. One fan wrote: “He has jinxed the poor lad with his gruesome horrendous spell at Spurs without a single title,” with a second adding: “Imagine your gaffer giving you a book about how he made your club’s biggest rivals a good team…”

Mudryk’s endeavour in his early Chelsea career saw him finally rewarded with his first goal for the club which came from a well-taken finish just 18 minutes into only Chelsea’s second Premier League win of the season.

Pochettino spoke about the impact the goal could have on Mudryk, he said: “We need to understand that young people need time and need to settle. It’s about adaptation. It’s a big change when Mudryk arrived here and when you arrive at a team, it’s not easy to settle in a team that isn’t solid.

“He wasn’t the cherry on the cake, they needed to add something to the team. It’s about time, having patience, trusting these young talented players, building confidence.”
