Chris Sutton believes Jurgen Klopp is taking football down a ‘dangerous route’ after he called for Liverpool’s defeat with Tottenham to be replayed.

The German felt that a replay ‘was the right thing to do’ after Luis Diaz’s goal was wrongly disallowed by the VAR.

Audio footage released shows VAR official Darren England saying the check was ‘perfect’ before swearing when he realises that the on-field decision was offside – when the Colombian was clearly on.

Chris Sutton previously told Mail Sport that Klopp’s call for Liverpool’s game against Tottenham to be replayed was ‘utter tripe’.

Mail Sport’s Ian Ladyman insisted he didn’t agree with Klopp’s belief, but said that he ‘might be a little bit more respectful’ to one of the game’s most celebrated managers.

Jurgen Klopp controversially called for Liverpool’s match against Tottenham to be replayed

VAR made a mistake in disallowing Luis Diaz’s goal which would have given the Reds the lead against Tottenham – in a match that finished 2-1 to Ange Postecoglou’s side

Sutton says Klopp is taking football down a ‘dangerous route’ by calling for a replay

Sutton fired back: ‘How would you describe it then? How would you describe a situation where we now want games replayed because of refereeing errors, human errors? That’s what happen – where will this lead.

‘Every week we’ll have clubs calling for games to be replayed. It’s absolute tripe. It’s absolute nonsense.’

Sutton went on to say that Klopp’s call for a replay is a ‘dangerous route’ to go down.

He said: ‘To even go down that route, it’s actually a dangerous route to go down. And, you know, it’s interesting. I said this on the show on Monday, who is going to want to actually be a referee with that pressure on them, that scrutiny on them?

‘I mean Darren England England must be feeling bad enough. How he comes back from this, I don’t know.

‘Jurgen Klopp shouldn’t have gone down that route about playing a game again, because it’s dangerous. It’s where it leads.

‘You can imagine weekly that managers from clubs saying we were wrong there. We need to play the game again. That’s not fair.’

Debate around the mistake at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium heated up again when VAR released the audio which showed how the error was made.

Sutton previously described Klopp’s calls for the game to be played again as ‘utter tripe’

Ladyman said that ‘nothing new’ was learned as he slammed the ‘ridiculous assertion’ that there had been a ‘conspiracy or that mistakes had been made on purpose’.

Sutton said that the most ‘galling thing’ was how ‘chaotic things were’ at Stockley Park and that the mistake was ‘always bound to happen’ due to the frenzied nature of the communication.

He added: ‘The chaos from the VAR hub to the referee and the language used, you could see that so many voices there, there was always going to be a misunderstanding at some stage and it happened on the biggest stage of all and it’s led to all this controversy.

‘But they don’t actually need to be clearer in the way they go about making these decisions, don’t they? The language (used).’

Ladyman meanwhile questioned why the referees couldn’t stop the game and rectify the mistake upon realising what had happened,.

He said: ‘I think my main takeaway from the whole week goes back to a point that you made on our show on Monday when we were talking to Mark Clattenberg, was that why couldn’t we just stop the game once the referees realised, the officials realised that they’d made the mistake?

‘I think that’s the thing that we should look at now because they had realised within about 30 seconds that they’d botched it up.’

It’s All Kicking Off is an exciting new podcast from Mail Sport that promises a different take on Premier League football.

It is available on MailOnline, Mail+, YouTube, Apple Music and Spotify.

Your browser does not support iframes.

IT’S ALL KICKING OFF!
