Jurgen Klopp was left furious at PGMOL’s apology after their VAR disasterclass during Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat at Tottenham.

Klopp’s Reds were reduced to 10 men in the 27th minute after referee Simon Hooper reviewed Curtis Jones’ tackle and controversially changed his decision from a yellow to a straight red card. Things went from bad to worse as Liverpool forward Diogo Jota was shown two yellows, both of which could be deemed harsh, in quick succession while the game was tied at 1-1.

But the most contentious decision was the incorrect chalking off of Luis Diaz’s first-half goal to put the Reds 1-0 up. Diaz was in fact on-side, but VAR official Darren England had mistakenly thought that Hooper’s on-field decision was to disallow the goal.

It has been suggested that England clearly saw Diaz was onside and told Hooper “check complete,” believing he was awarding the Colombian forward his goal. PGMOL owned up to their mistake by citing a “significant human error”.

But Klopp had no time for the PGMOL’s apology as his side missed out on crucial points, having been level until the 96th minute, when Joel Matip’s attempted clearance found the back of his own net.

Klopp fumed after the game: “When we saw it, we thought ‘that’s not offside’. They drew the lines wrong. It is so tough to deal with it. I’m now relatively calm, and during the game we were really calm. Your heart rate is 160-180… and you see that, and the red card and the next red card. It’s difficult.”

The German added: “How can Jota in this game go off the pitch with two yellow cards, the first he barely touched him and for sure not his fault. That is what is the problem. We have so many things. When did you last hear a game with 11 v 9? And we were close to 11v 8! There were no horrible fouls.

“We were not kicking players or whatever. The boys made a super intense game of it, it is crazy how hard we fought. In the end we got nothing. The result is gone but the performance will stay with me forever. I loved our attitude and our desire.”

And the 56-year-old was left exasperated at yet another VAR apology in the Premier League, saying: “Who does that help? We had that situation in the Man Utd game. Did Wolves get the points for it? We won’t get the points for it.

“We all thought that when VAR came in it would make things easier. I never saw a game like this with the most unfair circumstances, crazy decisions.”

The PGMOL apologised to Wolves back in August after Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana wiped out Sasa Kalajdzic late in the game. In stunning scenes, VAR Michael Salisbury did not deem Hooper’s decision a clear and obvious error, meaning Wolves weren’t awarded a penalty and went on to lose 1-0.
