Jurgen Klopp has slammed the PGMOL’s statement which admitted that Luis Diaz’s goal against Tottenham should have stood rather than being ruled out for offside.

Liverpool fell to a 2-1 defeat in London on Saturday as Joel Matip scored a late own goal to give Spurs the win, with both Diogo Jota and Curtis Jones sent off.

However, they thought they were ahead in the first half as Diaz appeared to beat the offside trap to convert before it was ruled out for offside. A very quick VAR check then followed, with no change to the on-field decision.

Replays showed that the decision was the wrong one, with PGMOL coming out after the match to issue a statement to acknowledge ‘significant human error’ in the decision.

Speaking after the match, Klopp slammed the statement as he said: ‘Who does that help? We had it in the Man United game. Did Wolves get points for it? We won’t.

Replays showed that the decision was the wrong one, with PGMOL coming out after the match to issue a statement

‘It doesn’t help. Nobody expects 100% right decision on field. We thought VAR might make it easier. Why are they under that much pressure for the decision to be made really quick today?’

The Reds boss was making reference to the previous apology from PGMOL when Wolves fell to a controversial 1-0 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford.

On that occasion, Andre Onana rushed out and took one of the Wolves’ forward line and VAR decided that a penalty would not be awarded in the last minute of the match.

The German continued to discuss how important the wrong decision was against his side in the match against Tottenham, as he believes it change the entire game.

‘It changed the momentum,’ Klopp continued.

‘In a game where you don’t get a lot, that’s super important. It was super difficult.’

While Klopp was informed of the statement during his post-match press conference, it remains to be seen as to whether Liverpool will be issued an apology direct.

The statement, which was released shortly after Liverpool fell to defeat, read: ‘PGMOL acknowledge a significant human error occurred during the first half of Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool,’ the statement began.

‘The goal by Luis Diaz was disallowed for offside by the on-field team of match officials. This was a clear and obvious factual error and should have resulted in the goal being awarded through VAR intervention, however, the VAR failed to intervene.

‘PGMOL will conduct a full review into the circumstances which led to the error.

‘PGMOL will immediately be contacting Liverpool at the conclusion of the fixture to acknowledge the error.’

The result sees Tottenham climb up to second in the Premier League table, while Liverpool were handed their first defeat of the season.
