Fantasy Premier League players were left "crying" after Pervis Estupinan's own-goal "disasterclass" for Brighton.

The Ecuadorian left-back has become a mainstay across FPL teams thanks to his stellar performances for the Seagulls this season. He almost rewarded their faith in the sixth minute of the trip to Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon, where he latched on to Billy Gilmour's pass with a clear run on goal.

But the defender's poked attempt was easily read and saved by Emiliano Martinez to deny the opener. And Estupinan quickly went from potential hero to villain, as the Villains dismantled the away side.

Goals from Ollie Watkins in the 14th and 21st minutes put Villa in a comfortable position mid-way through the first-half. But Brighton's woes were worsened five minutes after the second when Estupinan comically put the ball into his own net, having tripped over a tame pass from Moussa Diaby.

One Twitter user pointed out: "I know Estupinan owners are crying right now," while another tweeted "FPL Managers will definitely be crying with that Estupinan own goal."

A gutted FPL manager added: "Brighton are getting smoked and Estupinan is in my FPL…" while a fourth commented: "I knew he was going to blank today, just didn’t expect this disasterclass."

Another fumed: "Estupinan single-handedly ruining my FPL week before it's even really started," having been left disgusted with the defender's minus points contribution.

And it appeared even his real-life manager Roberto De Zerbi had seen enough by half-time. Estupinan was one of three players taken off at the break, giving way to Tariq Lamptey.
