Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher has insisted that his comments were a “joke” after Aaron Ramsdale’s father took exception to his view on his son’s reaction to David Raya’s save for Arsenal in the North London Derby. The Spaniard has come in for Ramsdale in the past few weeks, but the England man has been supportive of his fellow stopper from the sidelines.

Raya kept the jersey for the 2-2 North London derby draw and after making a stunning save to deny Brennan Johnson from scoring, cameras curiously panned to Ramsdale on the bench for a glimpse at his reaction – before he put his hands up in the air and applauded his team-mate.

While appearing supportive of Raya, Carragher refuted that suggestion and claimed that Ramsdale would have been “absolutely devastated” and compared it to an Oscar nominee watching another star win.

“I thought it was like the Oscars, you know when someone loses the Oscar and they start clapping and smiling for the other person,” Carragher said live on Sky Sports. “I was laughing when I saw that. He’s absolutely devastated.”

My lad has.”

However, speaking to The Overlap, Carragher was asked for his thoughts on Ramsdale Snr’s reply and he insisted: “It was a joke! I will never say anything back, and in some ways I admire it. My son plays, and it is completely different to being a fan or a pundit.”

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. He posted an old photo on Instagram of the Arsenal goalkeeper celebrating with fellow stopper Mark Travers during their Bournemouth days while Ramsdale was Travers’ understudy.

Raya made his Arsenal debut during the 1-0 win away to Everton after completing a season-long loan from Brentford in the summer, and the Spanish goalkeeper has retained his spot in the two matches since – only conceding against local rivals Tottenham.

After the win in Goodison Park, Mikel Arteta admitted he had previously considered changing his goalkeepers during games but regrettably decided against it. “I’m a really young manager, I’ve been in the job three and a half years. I have few regrets, but one of them is that on two occasions, I felt after 60 minutes and 85 minutes of two games in this period to change the goalkeeper in that moment,” he explained.

“I didn’t do it, I didn’t have the courage to do it. But I’m able to take a winger or striker and put a centre-back on to play a back five to hold on to a result. We drew those games, and I was so unhappy.

“Someone is going to do it, and maybe [people will say] that’s strange. But why not? Tell me why not. You have all the qualities in another goalkeeper to do something, you want to change the momentum, do it.”

Arsenal’s new kit for 2023/2024 is a stylish twist on a classic as it reinvents that mid-1990s vibe.
