Ryan Gravenberch's transfer to Liverpool from Bayern Munich has been called incomprehensible by a Germany legend.

The 21-year-old Netherlands international signed a five-year deal at Anfield after a transfer fee of around £35million pound was agreed between the two European heavyweights. A deal wasn't welcomed by everyone, including Torsten Frings.

The 46-year-old, who won a double in his only season at Bayern in 2004/05 and the 2006 World Cup with Germany, thinks Gravenberch should have stayed at the Allianz Arena after he impressed in his early Liverpool outings.

Speaking to Sport1, Frings said: "It is incomprehensible to many that such a young talent, for whom they paid a lot of money (£16m), goes to Liverpool – for an unbelievable amount of money. But you also have to understand the coach to a certain extent.

"If a player doesn't fit into the philosophy, it might make more sense to tell the player that and then let him decide whether he tries to assert himself or not looking for the opportunity at another club."

Frings added the midfielder had found a "sensationally good club" to further the development of his career.

The exit came due to the formation favoured by Thomas Tuchel in Germany, with the former Chelsea boss admitting that Gravenberch didn't quite fit.

Tuchel had said of the departure: "The main problem for him is that we don't really play with a [number] eight in our 4-2-3-1 system. And we're spoilt for choice up front, with really experienced players.

"Ryan is a very nice, hard-working, committed player. He wasn't happy with his situation.

"He sees the chance in Liverpool to fight for a place at eight in a 4-3-3. He's wanted to go for a while. An offer came in and we discussed it."

Gravenberch has since made three appearances for Liverpool in all competitions, impressing his manager.

He said after the win over LASK: “Ryan (Gravenberch) played a super game and was really decisive for us. (He played) very good, it was his first start for a while I think and he did really well."
