Wolves manager Gary O’Neil was angered after Luton were awarded a controversial penalty in the 1-1 draw at Kenilworth Road.

O’Neil’s side were leading 1-0 courtesy of a goal from Pedro Neto early in the second half, despite having Jean-Ricner Bellegarde sent off in the first half.

However, Luton were then awarded a penalty following a lengthy VAR check with Joao Gomes penalised for handball.

O’Neil is adamant that the referee Josh Smith should not have given a penalty and stressed that the ball hit Gomes’ leg and then bounced up onto his hand.

Carlton Morris scored the spot-kick, with Luton going on to secure a point.

O’Neil told BBC Sport: ‘I can’t get my head around the penalty. I have a lot of experience, I’ve suffered constant negative ones – I was told it wasn’t a penalty last season in Bournemouth’s game with Brentford last season on Jensen because it hit his leg and then his hand.

‘I was convinced it wasn’t going to be a penalty, it’s never a penalty. If that’s a penalty we’re in a really bad place.

‘The fact it hits his leg and bounces onto his arm is completely different.

Writing on Twitter, Gary Lineker described the decision to give the penalty as ‘ludicrous’.

Lineker wrote: ‘Another ludicrous handball penalty decision. On this occasion it’s gone against Wolves and in favour of Luton. Nuts.’

Former Premier League referee Mike Dean expressed surprise that VAR did not overturn the decision.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday, Dean said: ‘I have no idea [why a penalty was given]. If I knew I could tell you. I have no idea.’

O’Neil didn’t have any complaints about the dismissal of Jeanricner Bellegarde in the first half.

Bellegarde was sent off for kicking out at Luton’s Tom Lockyer.

O’Neil said: ‘He understands. He’s apologised to the group. We can’t suffer lack of professionalism.’
