Manchester City midfielder Rodri will miss next month’s showdown against Arsenal after he was sent off for violent conduct against Nottingham Forest.

Arsenal news, exclusives and analysis

The champions had been coasting towards another routine victory courtesy of early first half goals from Phil Foden and Erling Haaland.

Rodri had been instrumental in the opener, playing a superb lofted diagonal pass into the path of Kyle Walker, whose cutback was thumped home emphatically by his England teammate.

Haaland doubled the lead soon after with his eighth goal of what appears destined to be another prolific campaign.

City’s task of seeing out the game was rendered far more difficult than it needed to be, however, when Rodri was involved in a flashpoint with Morgan Gibbs-White a minute after the restart.

The Spain international had been attempting to usher the ball out of play under pressure from the Forest forward, who presence appeared to annoy the City midfielder.

Both players squared up to one another but it was Rodri who was given his marching orders after he appeared to place his hands around his opponent’s neck.

Gibbs-White may have exaggerated the contact and fell to the floor after Rodri had another nibble at him VAR was left with no option but to give him his marching orders.

The 27-year-old will be forced to sit out the next three matches which includes a likely summit meeting with last season’s Premier League runners-up Arsenal on October 8.
