{"id":291696,"date":"2023-09-22T20:34:07","date_gmt":"2023-09-22T20:34:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tellmysport.com\/?p=291696"},"modified":"2023-09-22T20:34:07","modified_gmt":"2023-09-22T20:34:07","slug":"england-and-scotland-players-wear-wristbands-in-tribute-to-spain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tellmysport.com\/soccer\/england-and-scotland-players-wear-wristbands-in-tribute-to-spain\/","title":{"rendered":"England and Scotland players wear wristbands in tribute to Spain"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>England and Scotland players wear wristbands donning words &#8216;it&#8217;s over&#8217; during Nations League clash as they stand in solidarity with Spain<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Both sides were playing their first games since the World Cup final this summer<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Spanish football found itself in scandal after\u00a0Luis Rubiales kissed Jenni Hermoso<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Mail Sport&#8217;s new WhatsApp Channel: Get the breaking news and exclusives here<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Both England and Scotland players wore white wristbands with &#8216;#SeAcabo&#8217; (&#8216;It&#8217;s over&#8217;) during of their Nations League clash at the Stadium of Light to show their support for the Spanish women&#8217;s side.<\/p>\n<p>Spanish football has found itself engulfed in scandal after Spanish FA president Luis Rubiales kissed player Jenni Hermoso on the lips in the immediate aftermath of Spain&#8217;s World Cup win last month.<\/p>\n<p>Rubiales remained defiant that he would not leave his post but eventually resigned earlier this month after Hermoso filed a complaint to the national prosecutor\u2019s office saying the kiss was not consensual.<\/p>\n<p>Even after Rubiales&#8217; departure, the Spanish squad maintained they would boycott their national team duties until more changes were made to the governance of women&#8217;s football in the country.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>All but two players agreed to end the boycott on Wednesday after a seven-hour meeting with the federation and Spain&#8217;s high court for sport.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/22\/20\/75741771-0-image-m-59_1695409900751.jpg\" height=\"455\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>England and Scotland players wore armbands showing solidarity with Spain players during their Nations League match<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/22\/20\/75741775-0-image-a-60_1695409909680.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>It was the sides&#8217; first game since the World Cup final which saw Luis Rubiales kiss Spain&#8217;s\u00a0Jenni Hermoso after the game<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/22\/20\/75738951-0-Before_the_game_the_Swedish_players_posed_with_their_opponents_a-a-56_1695409263317.jpg\" height=\"425\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Before Spain&#8217;s game with Sweden, both sets of players posed with a banner of solidarity<\/p>\n<p>Your browser does not support iframes.<\/p>\n<p>Spain were back in action themselves for the first time since the saga following their World Cup win took place, facing\u00a0Sweden in their opening game of the UEFA Women&#8217;s Nations League, following the meeting earlier this week.<\/p>\n<p>Seven of the players who started in the World Cup final were named in the starting line-up, and before the game their opponents showed their solidarity for their counterparts by posing together alongside a banner that read #SeAcabo &#8211; translating to &#8216;It&#8217;s over&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>The Spain players also posed with clenched fists in their pre-match photo.<\/p>\n<p>Spain took the lead in their first game as world champions, with Athenea del Castillo opening the scoring, before they were pegged back thanks to a goal from former Chelsea defender Magdalena Eriksson.
