Ronnie O’Sullivan has withdrawn from the upcoming British Open due to “medical reasons”, opening the door for his rivals to take the world number one spot.

A World Snooker Tour statement read: “Ronnie O’Sullivan has pulled out of next week’s Cazoo British Open for medical reasons. The world number one was due to face Jimmy Robertson in the opening round on Monday, but instead he has been replaced in the draw by Steven Hallworth.”

With the 47-year-old also withdrawing from the European Masters in August due to similar medical concerns, in addition to not competing in the Championship League, he is yet to play any ranking tournament this season and rivals Luca Brecel and Mark Allen have the opportunity to become the world No. 1 should they enjoy success in Cheltenham.

O’Sullivan is due to be back in action for the English Open on October 2 in Brentwood, but it remains to be seen whether he will opt to participate in the UK after warning fans that he may not be in attendance after victory in China.

JUST IN Ronnie O’Sullivan ‘preparing for death’ as snooker icon gives away trophy[INTERVIEW]

There is also the lingering possibility that after a disappointing 2022/23 season as he continues to deal with his tennis elbow issue, the Rocket may slip out of the top 16 entirely if he continues to skip the likes of the English Open, the Wuhan Open and International Championship in China, the Northern Ireland Open and the Champion of Champions – which would see him miss out on some of the elite events he will want to participate in.

“The idea is to play big events, I am going to try and miss all the little events,” O’Sullivan said after defeating Brecel 11-9 in the Shanghai Masters final. “There are big events in China so I have told my agent I want to play here and to make it happen.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. I will play it by ear. I am not contracted with Eurosport to play in the Home Nations events, just do the punditry.”

“They are not my favourite tournaments. The crowds are not good, not really well run, lots of players, lots of whatever so they will be last on my list really. I am at the stage where I don’t really need the money, events, victories. I will do my punditry work as that is contractual, but that doesn’t involve playing.

“I just want to play enough. I will make the effort to go to China 15-20 times a year if I can for some short trips. My elbow has been killing me again – it is a nightmare, and I have had injections. I am going to have to get more treatment on it, it can hurt to pick up a cup of tea or a frying pan.

“I am due to play in the English Open in Brentwood in October, but I will be flying back from Hong Kong Monday morning, landing at 7.00am and due to play 1.00pm that day in Essex. So I’ll give it a go.”
