<\/p>\nOle Gunnar Solskjaer has lambasted the abuse levelled against Manchester United defender Harry Maguire as "a disgrace."<\/p>\n
A little more than four years on from his \u00a380million arrival at Old Trafford, Maguire finds his reputation in tatters following a fall through the club's ranks. It was Solskjaer who signed the talent from Leicester City and made him club captain, but United incumbent Erik ten Hag has since stripped him of the armband and relegated Maguire largely to the bench.<\/p>\n
It's resulted in a cacophony of criticism both from United's fan base and rival supporters, as witnessed during the recent clash between England and Scotland. But Solskjaer has tired of seeing old skipper targeted by trolls, highlighting the good Maguire contributed when he first joined United in 2019.<\/p>\n

"Bruno Fernandes came straight in and lifted the team," the Norwegian told The Athletic when asked who his best signings were at United. "Harry Maguire \u2013 it\u2019s a disgrace that he\u2019s getting so much abuse. I feel sorry for him, but he\u2019s a strong lad and I hope it turns for him.<\/p>\n
"He raised our defence big time when he arrived and lifted the mood around the place. I can\u2019t remember every signing I made, but I should because there was a cap on three main ones every season."<\/p>\n

The spotlight on Maguire shone all the brighter after Gareth Southgate kept the centre-back in his latest England squad despite him playing just 23 minutes of football at his club so far this term. And the criticism resurfaced after Maguire scored an own-goal against Scotland, whose fans revelled in piling on the player further. <\/p>\n
Southgate later picked out pundits and journalists as the ones to blame for their criticism of the player, calling certain comments on Maguire 'an absolute joke'. That led to talkSPORT's Simon Jordan calling the Three Lions boss 'cowardly' for refusing to call out fans for their role. <\/p>\n

Maguire, 30, has been a victim of his own price-tag after United paid an inflated fee to convince Leicester to sell their star less than a week before the 2019 summer transfer deadline. After two successful seasons at the King Power, the Sheffield native saw his value skyrocket, and the Red Devils gave in to Leicester demands in a move that's since been made to look like wasteful.<\/p>\n
The defender has just one League Cup to show for his four years at United in terms of silverware, though many more revered talents in the squad could also be accused of underperforming. Not only does Solskjaer believe Maguire gets judged unfairly for his time at Old Trafford, the free-agent tactician maintains he's still one of the best buys he's made to date.<\/p>\n
