The Arsenal scouts who attended Reading’s 9-0 demolition of Exeter City will have left with a sense of excitement after running the rule over two potential signings. The Royals took on their League One rivals in the EFL Trophy at St James’ Park and made history with the club’s biggest victory in over 100 years.

And the Gunners’ talent-spotters will surely have left the stadium impressed by a few Reading players. Express Sport exclusively revealed on Tuesday that Mikel Arteta’s scouts were keeping a close eye on two youngsters as they look to strengthen their squad for the long term.

Reading’s exciting young duo, Caylan Vickers and Tyler Bindon, have each been given regular chances to impress this season and it seems the Gunners wanted to take a closer look at the pair.

Vickers has appeared in all seven of Reading’s League One matches so far this campaign. The 18-year-old came off the bench in the first two before squeezing his way into the starting XI, where he continued to shine.

Bindon, meanwhile, penned a two-year contract at the Select Car Leasing Stadium earlier this summer when he was snapped up from Los Angeles FC. The centre-back, also 18, has acquitted himself well across four appearances for Reading so far this season.

READ MORE Arsenal send scouts on lower-league mission with two teenagers catching the eye[EXCLUSIVE]

Like Vickers, Bindon’s first taste of senior football came only last month, and the mature way with which he has handled the step up is attracting suitors. Manager Ruben Selles had indicated he was prepared to use his talented youth players and handed them a chance against Exeter, with Vickers handed a start alongside Jayden Wareham up front.

From the off, the young striker looked a threat and even hit the post early on as Reading dominated proceedings. Doubles from Paul Maikaru and Dom Ballard, in addition to strikes from Tom McIntyre, Ben Elliott, Taylan Harris and an own goal from Zak Jules gave Reading an unassailable seven-goal lead.

In the 90th minute, Vickers finally got his moment after threatening all game. After twisting the defender into knots, he created enough space to get a shot away and found the back of the net to make it 8-0, before Dom Ballard’s second of the night secured the ninth to make it their biggest win in 122 years.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. More info

DON’T MISS

It may have been irrelevant in deciding the outcome, but there was enough panache about Vickers’ goal it to impress the visiting Arsenal scouts. Unfortunately for Bindon, he was left out of the 18-man squad as the Reading backline kept a clean sheet.

There is no indication yet as to whether Arsenal will move for the pair, but it would be difficult for their youth coaches at London Colney not to marvel at Vickers’ display.

And given there is a genuine path from the academy to the first team, as demonstrated by Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe, few could blame Vickers and Bindon if the north London side came calling.

Arsenal’s new kit for 2023/2024 is a stylish twist on a classic as it reinvents that mid-1990s vibe. A truly modern-looking shirt with a homage to the past, the Nike kit also includes a nod to the club’s iconic Invincible’s side in the finer details while catching the eye with the lightning bolt motif
