Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed the names of five players Manchester United were unable to sign during his time as the club's boss.

Solskjaer was at the wheel at Old Trafford for three years, leading the Red Devils to second place in the Premier League and a runners-up berth in the Europa League during the 2020-21 campaign. However, his stint was cut short the following season after a 4-1 defeat away to Watford in November 2021 saw the board call time on his reign.

The Red Devils made plenty of big-name signings during his time in charge, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, Donny van de Beek and the £73million arrival of Jadon Sancho. However, Solskjaer has now revealed five targets United missed out on, claiming his former employers "couldn't buy the players I mentioned to the club."

Pressed to name those players, Solskjaer told The Athletic: "Erling Haaland, before he made his Salzburg debut. Declan Rice, who wouldn’t have cost what he did in the summer. We discussed Moises Caicedo, but we felt we needed players ready for there and then."

Haaland went on to join Manchester City, helping United's bitter rivals to a famous Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League Treble last season. Rice, meanwhile, swapped West Ham for Arsenal in the summer, while Caicedo joined Chelsea from Brighton in a well-documented £115million switch last month.

Solskjaer continued by discussing United's desire to sign Jude Bellingham, now of Real Madrid, and their interest in former Tottenham forward Harry Kane, who has now joined Bayern Munich.

"We wanted Jude Bellingham badly — he’s a Man United player, but I respect he chose Dortmund," he reflected. "That was probably sensible.

"I would have signed Kane every day of the week and my understanding was that he wanted to come. But the club didn’t have the budget with the financial constraints from Covid-19, there was no bottomless pit."

United have also been restricted in the transfer market this summer, missing out on key targets despite the impressive arrivals of Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund. The Red Devils have endured a tough start to the season under Erik ten Hag and currently sit 13th in the Premier League.
