Monday Night Football analysts Jamie Carragher and Thomas Frank claim that Burnley’s disallowed winner at Nottingham Forest was an ‘extremely harsh’ decision by VAR.

Vincent Kompany’s side were held to a 1-1 draw with Forest after Lyle Foster’s late strike was ruled out by the video assistant referee for a handball in the build-up.

Replays showed the ball glancing the arm of Burnley’s Sander Berge just moments before he squared it for Foster to tap in.

In the analysis that followed on Sky Sports, both Carragher and Frank insisted that the goal should have stood and that Burnley should feel ‘hard done by’.

‘When looking at the frame-by-frame we can see he touches the ball a tiny bit, but I think it’s very harsh,’ said Brentford boss Frank.

‘What about the clear and obvious where they said they’d intervene? What if that was a defender? Would it be a penalty? They need to use common sense. They don’t use common sense.’

‘I’m with Thomas,’ Carragher added. ‘I think it’s extremely harsh. I think that should be a goal.

‘I think initially he is running, so his arms are in front and he’s trying to get there, then he sees the defender come across him.

‘The arm is maybe slightly different from his running action, but then also the defender is coming across, so that left arm would normally come up anyway.

‘It’s the slightest of touches but to say he deliberately handballed it… It didn’t change direction. I think they can feel a little bit aggrieved.’

Elsewhere in the match, Callum Hudson-Odoi scored his first goal for the club after curling in a stunning effort to cancel out Zeki Amdouni’s earlier strike.

The result saw Burnley claim their first point of the Premier League season, having fallen to defeat in their matches prior to tonight.
