{"id":291066,"date":"2023-09-18T12:35:34","date_gmt":"2023-09-18T12:35:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tellmysport.com\/?p=291066"},"modified":"2023-09-18T12:35:34","modified_gmt":"2023-09-18T12:35:34","slug":"toto-wolff-will-miss-japanese-grand-prix-due-to-knee-surgey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tellmysport.com\/racing\/f1\/toto-wolff-will-miss-japanese-grand-prix-due-to-knee-surgey\/","title":{"rendered":"Toto Wolff will MISS Japanese Grand Prix due to knee surgey"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Mercedes chief Toto Wolff will MISS this weekend&#8217;s Japanese Grand Prix due to knee surgery&#8230; but hopes to be back to see Max Verstappen clinch a third successive world crown in Qatar next month<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Mercedes boss Toto Wolff will miss the Japanese Grand Prix due to knee surgery<\/b><\/li>\n<li><strong>51-year-old set to have an operation in Austria to restore his cruciate ligament<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Max Verstappen can move a step closer to being world champion in Suzuka<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Mercedes boss Toto Wolff will be absent from this weekend&#8217;s Japanese Grand Prix as he undergoes knee surgery.<\/p>\n<p>The 51-year-old is set to have an operation in his native Austria to restore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left leg.<\/p>\n<p>Wolff damaged his knee a number of years ago and blamed it for a cycling accident during Formula One&#8217;s summer break which left him with a fractured elbow.<\/p>\n<p>Wolff&#8217;s role will be divided between a number of the team&#8217;s staff &#8211; including driver development director Jerome D&#8217;Ambrosio, the Belgian who took part in 20 F1 races in 2010 and 2011, and Mercedes&#8217; long-serving British chief communications officer Bradley Lord &#8211; often seen shadowing Wolff at the back of the garage.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It is understood Wolff will be on the team&#8217;s intercom across the weekend.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/18\/11\/75552075-0-image-a-21_1695034588530.jpg\" height=\"425\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Toto Wolff is set to undergo knee surgery that will cause him to miss the upcoming Japanese Grand Prix<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/18\/11\/75551987-0-image-a-12_1695034254348.jpg\" height=\"444\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>The Mercedes boss will return to his native Austria to restore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left leg<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/18\/11\/75551853-0-image-a-7_1695034044647.jpg\" height=\"357\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Mercedes will rely on a number of Wolff&#8217;s team staff to oversee the race in Suzuka, with the 51-year-old set to communicate through the intercom over the weekend<\/p>\n<p>Mercedes will head to Suzuka fearing that their best shot at victory this year may have escaped them following Carlos Sainz&#8217;s triumph at the Singapore Grand Prix.<\/p>\n<p>Ferrari&#8217;s Sainz became the first non-Red Bull driver to win this season &#8211; ending the world champions&#8217; unbeaten streak and Max Verstappen&#8217;s record run of 10 consecutive victories.<\/p>\n<p>Lewis Hamilton finished third, just 1.2 seconds behind Sainz, after George Russell &#8211; who at one point looked likely to win following Mercedes&#8217; roll of the strategy dice &#8211; crashed out on the final lap.<\/p>\n<p>Verstappen qualified 11th and finished fifth, 21 seconds adrift of Sainz. But Hamilton fears Red Bull&#8217;s lack of speed on the streets of Singapore is because they have already turned their attention to next season.<\/p>\n<p>While Verstappen can now not be crowned champion of the world for a third time in Japan, it is possible he could clinch the title in Qatar on October 8 with five rounds still left.<\/p>\n<p>And asked if Red Bull&#8217;s blip provided him with hope Verstappen&#8217;s dominance could be coming to an end, Hamilton, 38, said: &#8216;If you think about it, they probably haven&#8217;t been developing their car.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/18\/11\/75552073-0-image-a-22_1695034598393.jpg\" height=\"425\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Max Verstappen can move a step closer to wrapping up the Drivers&#8217; Championship in Japan<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/18\/11\/75551927-0-image-a-10_1695034119389.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>However, his record run of 10 consecutive Grand Prix victories came to an end last time out in Singapore<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/18\/11\/75551955-0-image-a-11_1695034146706.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Lewis Hamilton believes Red Bull already have one eye on preparing their car for next year following their dominance this season<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;McLaren brought an upgrade here. Other teams are still bringing upgrades, and they&#8217;re working on next year&#8217;s car. They would have definitely migrated to 2024 before us.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;So it is just one of those things. They are so far ahead that maybe they&#8217;re not developing their car, while we are still pushing to develop our current one.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Verstappen, who warned in the build-up to Sunday&#8217;s city-state race that the high-downforce street track would not suit Red Bull, said he expects to be back on top in Suzuka.<\/p>\n<p>Wolff, who is likely to return for the Qatar GP, added: &#8216;They will be strong again.
