Gary Neville has expressed doubts over Erik ten Hag’s recruitment policy at Manchester United amid the club’s nightmare start to the season. Ten Hag has taken control of United’s transfer targets since his arrival last year, and not all of them have made the desired impact at Old Trafford.

After splashing over £200million in his first summer as Red Devils manager, the Dutchman was handed another £190m before this month’s deadline.

He recruited Rasmus Hojlund, Mason Mount, Andre Onana, Sofyan Amrabat, Altay Bayindir, Sergio Reguilon and Jonny Evans to bolster his ranks after a positive maiden campaign.

But Mount underwhelmed before suffering an injury, Onana hasn’t looked at his best, and Rasmus Hojlund and Sofyan Amrabat arrived at the club with back problems.

United’s sporting unit, helmed by John Murtough, have left the recruitment down to Ten Hag, who inherited a significant amount of control after leaving Ajax to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

It has left Neville concerned about a supposed lack of leadership at the summit of the United hierarchy after unsuccessful attempts to give Jose Mourinho, Louis van Gaal and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer freedom in the transfer market.

I just wonder how good they are. That is my concern,” Gary Neville told Sky Sports.

“The club has been pulled from pillar to post over this last 10 or 11 years from a sporting point of view because of their manager’s wishes on recruitment. And it’s happened again. They are Erik ten Hag’s players.

“Those are the ones he wanted. Jose brought in the lads that he wanted, like Lukaku and Pogba and those lads.

“And Van Gaal went for a very technical type of player, loads of left-footed centre-backs and left-backs and stuff like that.

“They have all brought in who they wanted to bring in. I thought this time, there would be a stronger sporting project behind the scenes that would enable Manchester United to bring in a group of players.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. They have got no strength at the very top.

“If you are talking about the best sporting operators in this country and in Europe, Manchester United don’t have them; they just don’t, and that is my concern.”

Ten Hag’s 2022 recruits Lisandro Martinez, Casemiro and Antony have also started the new season poorly, prompting further doubt about Ten Hag’s player profiling.

But the Dutchman will insist that United are suffering nothing more than a difficult start to the campaign, with improvement soon to follow.

Follow Daily Express on Threads for all the latest news
