Serena Williams may have brought the curtain down on her incredible tennis career 12 months ago, but that doesn’t mean that she has stopped keeping herself in shape at the gym. However, the 23-time Grand Slam champion is finding it harder to keep motivated these days and the reason behind it is a simple one – there’s nothing to win at the end of it.

The American sporting icon ended her playing days with 73 career titles to her name, including seven Australian Opens, three French Opens, seven Wimbledon Championships and six US Open titles, confirming her as one of the sport’s all-time greats.

The 41-year-old has since turned her attention to family life and business ventures away from tennis, but it would seem that her inherent competitive nature has made working out a hollow exercise.

Williams took to social media to share her thoughts on the issue and received an interesting response from her own husband.

She wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “I’m not used to working out with no goal or to be honest – no championship in my mind. This is super weird.”

Spouse Alexis Ohanian, who is the co-founder of social media platform Reddit, replied: “So… you wanna go back on tour?”

The post received a range of responses from fans, some of which encouraged Williams to make a comeback whilst others urged her to enjoy her retirement.

@DrAsifQasim wrote: “Roll with it and enjoy the ride – I’m sure new goals will find you soon!”

@realOkeyAnya posted: “Whatever you do, don’t listen to those asking that you come back. Enjoy your retirement!” which prompted a response from an undecided fan.

@letusreason2 replied: “Ugh, I’m so torn! I think she misses it as much as we miss her; for that reason I don’t think it’s completely selfish to wish for that; but to your point, she’s given so much of her self/life/time to us via the sport, I can very much appreciate her staying the course w/her family.”

@MowafakAlkawass took a more considered view of Williams’ posted. He wrote: “To be honest this is a great msg to younger athletes. Every practice should have plan and purpose. The overall training should have a goal on annual basis and of course long term vision. Thank you #Serena.”

More info

Williams has hinted before that she would not completely rule out a return to tennis. Speaking to E! in February, she said: It’s interesting. I think I feel torn because I’m still able to play at a very, very, very high level.

“I also wanted to walk away when I’m healthy and have a quality of life. But I’m inch by inch leaning away, inch by inch embracing it. I was playing earlier when I first retired because it was hard to do it cold turkey.

“But lately, I haven’t played so much. And I miss it. I’m like, ‘Oh my goodness. I gotta get out there’. But it’s hard for me to get out there. I did play the other day, and it’s just like, ‘There’s no way I shouldn’t be playing professional tennis’. Like, there’s literally no excuse.

“But I mean, I guess there is an excuse, right? It’s hard because when I’m playing I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh, I’m pretty good at this. I can continue to do this,’ which not a lot of people can say.”

Williams gave birth to her second daughter last month.
