Thanasi Kokkinakis played up to being a pantomime villain following his Davis Cup win over Dominic Stricker in Manchester by riling up some of the football fans in the arena. Australia were up against Switzerland on Saturday as they looked to make it two consecutive group wins.

Kokkinakis was first up for Australia in the singles against Stricker, but the Swiss was no match for the 27-year-old. He saved five break points to eventually put Australia 1-0 ahead in the tie and Kokkinakis was interviewed on court after his win.

With the match taking place in the Manchester Arena, the interviewer wanted to get Kokkinakis to pick between the two main football teams in the city. He was asked: “Well we are here in Manchester so I have to ask you the question, Manchester City or Manchester United?”

Kokkinakis smiled and took his time before responding: “Chelsea.” The Aussie star laughed to himself but there was a patter of boos from the crowd for picking a non-Manchester team.
