Max Verstappen blasted his Red Bull team during the third free practice session of the weekend at the Singapore Grand Prix. The Dutch driver struggled once again following a messy Friday for the team.

Red Bull endured a problematic first two practice sessions on Friday with both Verstappen and team-mate Sergio Perez struggling with the balance of their machinery. The two drivers failed to hold a candle to Ferrari’s pace throughout Friday’s running.

The team’s struggles carried over into FP3 on Saturday, despite Helmut Marko insisting that the team’s issues had been solved ahead of the session. Verstappen ended the final practice outing in P4, while Checo could only manage a lap that put him seven-tenths down on Carlos Sainz, who topped the timing sheets once again.

With the Dutchman struggling to mix it with the fastest drivers of the session, Verstappen came onto the radio to complain, stating: “I’m sorry, but I cannot drive with these upshifts. What the f**k is this? Unacceptable.”

The Dutchman reported earlier: “These upshifts! What the ****!”, despite temporarily topping the timing screens thanks to the lap in question.

Verstappen’s race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, came onto the radio to ask for feedback once the chequered flag had waved. The Dutchman responded: “Maybe a little bit smoother. But yeah, miles off still. It’s just giving me wheelspin. It’s not only upshifts, [but] also downshifts.

“I’m just struggling for rear grip. You see that last sector? I’m just drifting. I think if I’m going to compete in drifting I might win the race.”

More F1… We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. More info

The 25-year-old realised these fears after FP2 on Friday, explaining to Sky Sports F1: “It was a bit unexpected today. Yeah, just struggling a lot with the balance of the car. We tried quite a few things in FP2… some worked, some didn’t.”

Addressing the team’s chances of taking pole position, Verstappen shrugged: “We’ll try to of course improve, but it’s quite a big gap. Ferrari is very fast, I think we’re just way worse than we expected.”

The Milton Keynes-based team have only missed out on pole position four times this season, but Ferrari have a golden opportunity to make it back-to-back poles for the first time in a year with Sainz looking blisteringly quick throughout all three practice sessions.
