Manchester United icon Peter Schmeichel believes Rasmus Hojlund has all the hallmarks to become the same “kind of player” as Wayne Rooney for the Old Trafford outfit, but that could all be down to how Erik ten Hag handles the striker. United spent big on Hojlund this summer despite the Danish forward being relatively unproven at the elite level.

He arrived at the club carrying an injury as well with United fans finally seeing their new No 9 in action with a cameo appearance off the bench against Arsenal before the international break. Hojlund will be expected to start for the first time for United’s home clash against Brighton.

And Schmeichel believes the Old Trafford crowd are in for a treat with his compatriot likened to United great Rooney. “He’s just got complete and utter unfulfilled potential and I’m very excited about him at United, because I don’t think we’ve ever had a player like him,” he told United Review.

“We’ve had different players in combinations, but the closest one I can get to is Wayne Rooney. Rooney wasn’t slow, but Rasmus is quick, and that’s different. I’m not saying Rasmus is as good as Wayne, because, my God, Wayne was so good and he achieved so much, but Rasmus could be that kind of player.”

However, Schmeichel added the onus will be on Ten Hag to unlock Hojlund’s full potential. “He’s a very, very nice boy,” he added.

“I’ve been asked about him a lot, and the phrase I always use is that he has a lot of unfulfilled potential. There isn’t a weakness in his game. There isn’t a part of his game where he can’t be absolutely excellent.

This guy is everything: he’s big, strong, quick, physical, technical, tactically adept.

“Everything you want in a footballer, everything you want in a striker. He’s got the nose, as well, of a No 9.”

Hojlund played in both matches for Denmark duriing the international break as they grabbed important wins over San Marino and Finland. But the 20-year-old had his minutes managed as he came off the bench in both matches.
