Former Chelsea transfer target Arsen Zakharyan has spoken of his relief after deciding to join Real Sociedad this summer. The playmaker had been long-admired at Stamford Bridge but ultimately he opted to snub the approach in favour of a more ‘interesting’ opportunity with the La Liga outfit, and the midfielder aimed a thinly-veiled dig at Todd Boehly’s ambitious project in the process.

Boehly has splashed the cash since his arrival to the tune of £1billion, rebuilding the Blues in the hope of making them title contenders in both the short and long term. Significant fees have been forked out in all departments, and further spending is anticipated in the January transfer window and beyond.

Chelsea welcomed 12 new signings over the course of the summer, though they came close to acquiring a 13th in the shape of Zakharyan. The 20-year-old was identified as a transfer target over 12 months ago when they were set to activate his release clause, but Russia’s invasion of Ukraine put the deal on pause.

Boehly pushed to sign Zakharyan once again before the start of the season and reports suggested that he would have been loaned out to sister club Strasbourg in the Ligue 1 immediately to continue his development. But a deal between Chelsea and Dinamo Moscow never materialised, and Sociedad pounced to lure the midfielder to Spain.

I thought I could fail. I didn’t understand anything about my future, I was in limbo.

“Fortunately, everything worked out. I was nervous, very nervous. For me, it was more interesting to come to Real than to Chelsea. It was also a more realistic option. There are also doubts about a clear pathway for each new signing, given that the likes of Marc Cucurella and other fresh faces have already tried to be offloaded.
