The good news for Luke Donald is that Europe’s boy wonder, Ludvig Aberg, shares the lead at Wentworth. If there is a note of concern it might just surround Rory McIlroy’s reliance on a birdie at the 18th hole to make the cut.

Less than a fortnight out from the Ryder Cup, it can hardly have been reassuring to see the team’s leading man stranded on even par with one to play in his second round at the BMW PGA Championship.

That had McIlroy one outside the line, but after booming a 298-yard drive at the par five, he hit his approach a further 212 yards to leave himself two putts from 45 feet to creep into the weekend.

But co-leader Aberg will give Donald real joy — the 23-year-old phenomenon who in the past fortnight has won his first professional title and secured a wildcard for Rome. He went round in 66 to reach 10 under, despite a double bogey on the ninth.

Wrapping up the round in near darkness, Aberg concluded with three straight birdies.

The Swede, who shares top spot with his countryman Sebastian Soderberg, said: ‘I probably haven’t played in the dark since I played with my friends at home. It was kind of a weird finish.’

McIlroy said: ‘I haven’t been at my best over the last couple of days but I don’t feel like I’m too far away, and I will try to finish the week off on a good, positive note.’

Ludvig Aberg has continued to impress at the at the BMW PGA Championship and shares the lead at Wentworth

Rory McIlroy, however, has struggled and had to rely on a birdie on the final hole to make the cut less than a fortnight away from the Ryder Cup
