Tottenham star Son Heung-min looked completely shellshocked after being denied a penalty on international duty with South Korea.

The Asian nation completed the international break with a narrow 1-0 win over Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, Midtjylland forward Cho Gue-sung scoring the only goal of the game. But South Korea should have been given the chance to double their lead midway through the first half when Son was hacked down in the box.

Son latched onto a short pass on the edge of the box but was taken out by Saudi defender Hassan Altambakti before being able to go any further. It looked like a stonewall penalty, with replays confirming that Altambakti had cleaned out Son.

Yet Premier League referee Andy Madley opted to wave away Son's appeals, much to the disbelief of the 31-year-old. VAR also failed to overturn the decision inside a virtually empty St James' Park.

The incident gained plenty of traction on social media, where one fan called it: "The clearest penalty you will ever see for the rest of your days." Others opted for a similar theme.

One person wrote: 'Son is robbed of this penalty. I don't know why Andy Madley still officiates Premier League matches." As someone else said: "State of refereeing today."

A third user added: "I like how Son was basically laughing at that decision." While another fan commented: "No surprise given some decisions I seen him give against Everton last week."

Son will be hoping for slightly better officiating when he turns out for Tottenham against Sheffield United on Saturday. The Lilywhites are back in action at 3pm against the Blades, looking to maintain their impressive start to the season.
