Harry Maguire suffered brutal treatment from Scotland fans after coming on as a substitute for England – before putting the ball in his own net.

The Three Lions enjoyed a stellar first-half at Hampden Park. Gareth Southgate's side went 2-0 up thanks to goals from Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham, though they were not without some fortune.

Southgate then irked a section of fans on social media by bringing on recently-struggling defender Maguire on for Marc Guehi at centre-back at the break.

And the 30-year-old justified their concerns by scoring an own-goal just 22 minutes after coming on.

Maguire was immediately on the receiving end of some taunting from rival fans, who sought to unsettle him by making noises that implied he was about to make a mistake.

Fans had voiced their frustration at Southgate for giving the defender another chance, having been slammed for "hugging his team-mate" in England's 1-1 draw to Ukraine last week. They took to social media as the change was revealed at half-time.

One Twitter user fumed: "Maguire on? Maybe Gareth is a Scotland fan after all."

Another tweeted: "45mins without Maguire starting & Southgate starts twitching and has to bring him on."

A third raged: "Just when we thought Southgate had woken up, he goes and brings Maguire on."
