So who will line up on the right wing for Manchester United against Brighton this Saturday? Frankly, it’s anyone’s guess.

It could yet be, against all odds, Anwar El Ghazi, a middling player who fell out of favour at Aston Villa, played just twice on loan at Everton and recently had his PSV Eindhoven contract terminated by mutual consent.

As Mail Sport revealed on Monday night, United are considering a move for the 28-year-old, a free agent who had offers from Saudi Arabian clubs this summer.

He would be the most astonishing Erik ten Hag quick-fix yet, not that United’s manager ever wanted or expected to be in such a situation.

A series of extraordinary circumstances have conspired to leave United short in a key attacking position as they look to kick-start their stuttering season.

Manchester United have weighed up a shock move for free agent winger Anwar El Ghazi

El Ghazi does boast plenty of Premier League experience from his time with Aston Villa

Erik ten Hag has been left short of options on the right wing, hence the desperate measures

El Ghazi would at least bring Premier League experience, having played 73 times in the competition for Villa and Everton, scoring 15 goals.

Ten Hag presumably watches more of the Eredivisie than most and perhaps appreciated the eight goals El Ghazi netted for PSV last season.

But the social media reaction of United fans to the news included word like ‘speechless’ and ‘stunned’ and it’s hard to disagree. This would look like a pretty desperate move by United.

Yet would signing El Ghazi be any different to the emergency loan moves for Wout Weghorst and Marcel Sabitzer last season, or Sergio Reguilon and Sofyan Amrabat on deadline day?

As Harold Macmillan said when he was British Prime Minister, it’s all because of ‘the opposition of events’ – an utterance altered to the more famous quote: ‘Events, dear boy, events’.

Ten Hag would understand. He has become accustomed to pile-ups of injuries or suspensions, or straightforward lack of depth, and the need to find a sticking plaster solution.

Events have certainly intervened again here to leave United severely depleted on the right wing.

Jadon Sancho publicly contradicted Ten Hag following his omission from the Arsenal game

Brazilian winger Antony has been placed on leave as he fights assault allegations

Mason Greenwood is now on loan with Getafe in Spain after leaving Manchester United

A few years ago, it looked like Mason Greenwood had the potential to hold down that position for several years to come but we know what happened there.

Now the 21-year-old is on loan at Getafe in Spain, never to play for United again, and trying to pick up the pieces of his career.

Sancho’s Old Trafford career hangs in the balance after he essentially accused Ten Hag of lying over his performance in training after he was dropped for the defeat at Arsenal.

The England international cost United £73million just two years ago but has rarely justified that price tag.

Ten Hag supported Sancho through his mental health and injury struggles last season, sending him to train individually in the Netherlands at one stage, but clearly isn’t impressed with the player.

Sancho claims he has been made a scapegoat at United, his statement contradicting Ten Hag remaining pinned at the top of his X profile despite talks between the pair on Monday.

Amad might have claimed the right wing position if not for a knee injury that required surgery

Facundo Pellistri could fill in the vacant position having twice come off the bench this season

Premier League unless stated

Saturday Brighton (H)

September 20 Bayern Munich (A)

Champions League group stage

September 23 Burnley (A)

September 26 Crystal Palace (H)

Carabao Cup third round

September 30 Crystal Palace (H)

October 3 Galatasaray (H)

Champions League group stage

It remains to be seen if the pair have buried the hatchet in time for Sancho to play in his less favoured right wing position against Brighton.

A more regular starter in that role, £85m buy Antony, has been placed on leave by the club until further notice following allegations that he attacked three women.

Antony is busy giving TV interviews and publishing WhatsApp screenshots on Instagram as he fights to clear his name. The allegations remain under investigation by police in Manchester and Sao Paulo.

That eliminates the primary contenders to play in that position but what frustrated United fans over the El Ghazi news was that it overlooked other options already in the squad.

Amad Diallo would have been champing at the bit to show what he can do following a successful loan spell with Championship club Sunderland last season.

But the Ivorian is currently recovering from knee surgery after he hobbled off the pitch during United’s pre-season tour match against Arsenal in July and will be sidelined for a while yet.

Ten Hag may come up with a solution that sees Marcus Rashford switch from the left to right

Bruno Fernandes also played on the right side on a number of occasions during last season

Alejandro Garnacho is also skilled enough to play on the right side if required by Ten Hag

The Uruguayan Facundo Pellistri is available, however, and is also eager to prove to Ten Hag he deserves more opportunities.

Pellistri, 21, came off the bench against Wolves and Tottenham but is maybe deserving of a start against Brighton.

It wouldn’t do the youngster’s confidence a great deal of good if United went into the free agent market to sign a stop-gap rather than play him.

And there are other existing solutions – Marcus Rashford could switch across from left side to right side if required, while captain Bruno Fernandes played on the right several times last season.

Alejandro Garnacho, who brings an X-factor with his game, is also capable of playing there.

So while United have been left short in this area, there remain plenty of options for Ten Hag within his existing squad as opposed to dipping into the market once again.

It’s All Kicking Off is an exciting new podcast from Mail Sport that promises a different take on Premier League football.

It is available on MailOnline, Mail+, YouTube, Apple Music and Spotify.

Your browser does not support iframes.

IT’S ALL KICKING OFF!
