Andy Murray warned Carlos Alcaraz that he needs to be more consistent if he is to reach Novak Djokovic’s level after the Serb’s US Open victory. Djokovic has won three Grand Slam titles this season but failed to make it a full house when he was beaten by Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final.

“I said that after Wimbledon, everyone was saying it was a changing of the guard, but it wasn’t for me,” Murray said. “Physically, motivation, whether someone like Alcaraz improves — he’s an amazing player, Alcaraz, he’s brilliant, but to do what Novak is doing on a consistent basis is different.”

In July, 20-year-old Alcaraz defeated Djokovic in the Wimbledon final, ending the Serbian’s four-year reign. However, Alcaraz missed out on a rematch after his loss to Daniil Medvedev in the US Open semi-final.

“It’s up to the young guys to be pushing Novak and looking to overtake him. It doesn’t look like that’s close to happening,” Murray added. “Novak’s been an incredible player for a very long time, like Roger and Rafa, it’s the longevity and how long they’ve all been able to do that for.

“Novak’s longevity has been the greatest. He’s played at this level for such a long time now.”

Djokovic’s defeat of Medvedev in the US Open final on Sunday cemented his 24th Grand Slam title, equalling former No 1 tennis player Margaret Court’s record of major singles titles.

The 36-year-old beat his opponent in straight sets (6-3, 7-6, 6-3), reinforcing his status as the current king of men’s tennis. The victory also saw Djokovic officially regain his ATP No 1 ranking, alongside a huge 3,260 point lead over Alcaraz’s No 2 spot.

Djokovic confirmed he has no plans to retire any time soon, saying: “I don’t want to leave this sport if I’m still at the top, if I’m still playing this way. Eventually, one day I will leave tennis in about 23, 24 years. And there is going to be new young players coming up. Until then, I guess you will see me a bit more.”

Djokovic is set to play for Serbia in the upcoming Davis Cup, which takes place in Valencia this week.
