Scotland lost 18-3 to South Africa after Springboks centre Jesse Kriel avoided a possible red card less than a minute into their title defence.<\/p>\n<p>The Scots have been left in a difficult position in their group with games against Ireland, Tonga and Romania to come, having seen two second-half tries from Pieter-Steph Du Toit and Kurt-Lee Arendse take the game away &#8211; having escaped the chance of going down to 14 men in the early stages of the match.<\/p>\n<p>A head-on-head tackle by Kriel was not picked up by the officials as Welsh TMO Ben Whitehouse did not intervene and communicate with Australian referee Angus Gardner, after Kriel completely missed being sanctioned following a challenge on No. 8 Jack Dempsey, who took the ball into contact as the pair made head-on-head contact which resulted in a nasty head collision as a result of Kriel\u2019s poor tackling technique &#8211; leaving Scotland boss Townsend livid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw it on the television from two screens away and it did look like it was a head-on-head collision and I was expecting the TMO to come in to make the referee aware of that,\u201d Townsend said.<\/p>\n<p> <strong> JUST IN <\/strong> <strong>England rugby stars banned from drinking booze at World Cup after Ford warning[LATEST] <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.images.express.co.uk\/img\/dynamic\/69\/590x\/secondary\/Scotland-rugby-Gregor-Townsend-4953243.jpg?r=1694421716268\"><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho knows if it had been a red card? We had a red card on Saturday and it didn\u2019t help or change the game in terms of Argentina\u2019s favour against England, so who knows? He had a rib injury which seemed like it was going to stop him from continuing but he dug deep and fought really hard.
