New US Open champion Coco Gauff has asked her fans not to sing a particular song that has been associated with the young American at the tournament. The 19-year-old home star defeated Aryna Sabalenka 2-6 6-3 6-2 to send the crowd at the Arthur Ashe Stadium into raptures.

Gauff claimed her first Grand Slam and became the first American US Open winner since Sloane Stephens in 2017, as an overwhelmingly supportive home crowd sang her name long into the night amid celebrations, with American tennis enjoying a huge boom in recent years after Ben Shelton also reached the semi-finals of the men’s tournament.

In New York, those supporting Gauff have played and sung to O.T. Genasis’ record titled ‘CoCo’ which has the famous hook of “I’m in love with the Coco” but Gauff has asked that fans no longer sing that to her due to the actual meaning behind the song.

“No, I did not want them to play that because it does not mean my name,” Gauff said in her post-match press conference as she chuckled through her response. “It means something else. But sometimes people in the crowd do say that, and I’m, like, yeah, that’s cute, but please no.”

Genasis said: “I come from the ghetto, so I see everything from street dudes to drug dealers. I’ve seen everything… So, I felt like I had to talk about it, you know what I’m saying?”

Though Gauff has since played down her association with the song, she instead spoke about another hit in Jay-Z’s Empire State Of Mind that she felt reflected the journey she had been on in the tournament.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. I still have no words. I don’t think it can be put into words.

“But, you know, there is a song lyric that I want to use for my Instagram caption. It goes, ‘Concrete jungle, where dreams are made of’. Thank you. Yeah, that lyric is true. New York City is the city where dreams are made of.”

That was indeed her caption, but it remains to be seen whether her supporters will drop the ‘Coco’ song and instead blare out Jay-Z’s record in future.

US Open tennis makes its long-awaited return to Sky Sports and it’s certainly not something to be missed.

Sky Sports subscribers on Sky Glass, Sky Stream, Sky Q, and the Sky Sports app will be able to watch all courts for the first time on Sky Sports.

Want to watch the US Open Tennis but don’t own Sky?

Never fear as you can get Sky Glass, Sky TV, Netflix for £14 a month for six months – thanks to a limited time deal.

You can also get six months Sky Sports completely free.
