Despite turning pro back in 2003, US Open finalist Novak Djokovic is far from contemplating retirement. After closing in on his 24th Grand Slam, the Serbian star made it clear he has no intentions of calling it quits until his dominance is over.

Leveraging his experience, Djokovic ended the unprecedented journey of American Ben Shelton at the 2023 US Open. Djokovic secured the victory with a score of 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 (4) in a match that lasted two hours and 41 minutes, taking place beneath the roof of the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion celebrated lightheartedly after his win against Shelton, imitating the American’s celebration. He pretended to hold a phone with his right hand, briefly bringing it close to his ear, and then humorously signaled a hang-up.

Following this playful gesture, Djokovic approached the center net and tapped his racquet on its netted surface as a friendly greeting to Shelton, showcasing exemplary sportsmanship. He then addressed the media, where he was asked about retirement.

Don’t miss… “It probably sounds cocky or arrogant, but I’m not really surprised,” said the Serbian, competing against the top young players. “I know how much work and dedication I put into trying to be in this position.

“I know I deserve this. I always believe in myself, in my own capabilities as a tennis player, to be able to deliver when it matters.

“I am not really surprised, to be honest. I feel good physically. I have been as good as I’ve been in years and years. Age is just a number. That phrase is really resonating with me at the moment.”

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. More info

Djokovic intends to stay in tennis as long as he remains at the pinnacle of his game. He mentioned that he might contemplate retirement only if he consistently faces defeat by younger players in Grand Slam events in the future.

“I don’t want to even consider leaving tennis or thinking about an end if I’m still at the top of the game. I will probably consider doing that if I get my a** kicked by young guys in Grand Slams in the years to come.”

Djokovic is eyeing his third major title of the year and his 24th career major win. This victory would put him on par with the record held by Margaret Court.

Should Djokovic emerge as the victor in this tournament, he would surpass Serena Williams and hold the record for the most major singles championships in the Open era. “It’s another shot for history,” said the Serbian regarding breaking the record.
