Chester City fans have condemned their own fans after sickening chants of "Lucy Letby, she's one of your own" were heard at their clash with Hereford.

Chester FC slammed the "appalling" chanting, which they said "demonstrated a deeply concerning lack of compassion, understanding and decency" – and the club are reviewing CCTV to find the culprits.

Last month, Letby, who was born in Hereford, was convicted of murdering seven babies and attempting to kill six others at the Countess of Chester Hospital.

Letby is the most prolific child serial killer in modern British history – with the judge ruling the nurse's actions as "persistent, calculated and cold-blooded," before sentencing her to multiple life sentences behind bars.

Chester fans were outraged on a supporters forum, with one posting: "Oh FFS, they didn't did they? The person next to them in the stand could have lost a child to her, for all they know!"

"Chester is a small place to be fair. I know one of the families affected, chanting about it is disgusting," a second said. And another added: "Some of the young lads need a head wobble!"

New rules on tragedy chanting were implemented by the Premier League, EFL, National League and leading women's leagues in England at the start of the new season.

As a result, chanting about such tragedy – like the Hillsborough disaster or the Munich Air Crash – is now considered a criminal offence.
