Fluminense president Mario Bittencourt has revealed details of his conversation with Liverpool after their proposed move for midfielder Andre fell through this summer.

The Reds showed interest in Andre in the latest transfer window, but were unable to get a deal over the line, with the Brazilian outfit reportedly unwilling to lose the 22-year-old during the Copa Libertadores.

Bittencourt has now confirmed Liverpool did reach out to him over a potential transfer, but the timing wasn’t right for Fluminense.

‘Liverpool’s chief executive contacted me directly,’ Bittencourt said.

‘I replied to him: “My friend, I don’t sell players now. If you want to buy now to take in January, we can start talking, or if you want to wait until December”.’

Liverpool made significant changes to their midfield this summer, with Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all leaving the club.

They were replaced by Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch, who arrived from Bayern Munich on deadline day.

Mac Allister and Szoboszlai have settled in well at Anfield, helping Jurgen Klopp’s men pick up 10 points from their opening four matches, and Gravenberch will hope to follow in their footsteps after a difficult year in Germany.

Bittencourt’s comments suggest Liverpool’s midfield overhaul may not be complete, as he hinted the Merseyside club could return for Andre ahead of the January transfer window.

Andre is a holding midfielder who has already made over 150 appearances for Fluminense after breaking into the team as a teenager in 2020.

The defensive midfield position has been a problem area for Liverpool this summer after they missed out on Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia to Chelsea.

Andre could be seen as the player to fill the void if Liverpool opt to revive their interest in him this winter.
