Real Madrid have released stunning footage showing how their new retractable pitch at the Santiago Bernabeu works.

Renovation work at the Spanish giants’ stadium began over two years ago, but the end result highlights how it has been well worth the wait.

The video shows how the fully retractable pitch can be stored beneath the stadium with just one click of a button.

Then, when it comes to matchday, the pitch is moved back to ground level with the different sections of the surface sliding into place as part of a slick operation.

Maintaining the quality of the pitch is of paramount importance, and Madrid have left no stone unturned from this perspective.

Major redevelopment work has been carried out at the Bernabeu over the past two years

The Bernabeu now has a retractable roof in place as well to complement the retractable pitch

The club have installed air conditioning, LED lighting and ultraviolet light therapy to keep the surface in prime condition.

Madrid are not the first team to install a retractable pitch, as Tottenham also included one as part of their stadium when they moved into their new ground in 2019. However, Madrid have taken the standard of retractable pitches to the next level with their remarkable attention to detail.

Over the past four years, Spurs have managed to host major events such as NFL matches and pop concerts, including Beyonce earlier this year, to bring in additional revenue to the club.

Madrid are also expected to attract some of the biggest events in the world to their stadium following their redevelopment, with basketball matches and trade shows likely to take place at the Bernabeu in the not-too-distant future.

This is set to earn them billions in revenue, as Madrid look to cement themselves as Europe’s biggest club.

It is not just the pitch that has been redeveloped either, as Madrid have also added a retractable roof to their iconic stadium.

The club had also released footage over the weekend highlighting the changes made to the Bernabeu, and received plenty of plaudits online.

Gary Neville was quick to praise the spectacular stadium, posting on X: ‘That’s how to do it!’

Jude Bellingham scored a stoppage-time winner in Madrid’s first match on their new pitch

Neville has been vocal in his criticism of the lack of refurbishment at Old Trafford under the Glazers in recent years, but was clearly impressed by the work done over in the Spanish capital.

Madrid played their first three league games of the season away from home as the finishing touches were made to their stadium, but their players got their first taste of action at the redeveloped Bernabeu on Saturday.

The grand opening could not have gone much better for Madrid as they battled back from a goal down to beat Getafe 2-1, with summer signing Jude Bellingham scoring a stoppage-time winner.

His late goal sparked wild celebrations, with over 80,000 fans hailing their latest star on a historic evening for Los Blancos.
