The Inter Miami forward scored twice in the final before converting his penalty in the shootout which Argentina won 4-2.<\/p>\n<p>En route to the final, the South American nation battled past the Netherlands, triumphing again on penalties in the quarter-finals after a dramatic and feisty contest that saw 16 yellow cards issued throughout the game.<\/p>\n<p>Van Gaal was the man in the Dutch dugout for the defeat but the 72-year-old believes that the tournament was predetermined to ensure that Messi and the Argentinian national team would triumph in what will likely be the legendary forward\u2019s last World Cup.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the Eredivisie awards to Dutch outlet NOS, Van Gaal said: \u201cI don\u2019t really want to say much about it. <\/p>\n<h3>Recommended<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/static.independent.co.uk\/2023\/08\/26\/06\/69f68b1274f3584b47d03bbcff504ceeY29udGVudHNlYXJjaGFwaSwxNjkzMDM5Nzgx-2.20758759.jpg\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/static.independent.co.uk\/2023\/09\/05\/11\/SOCCER%20Man%20City%20%2016413422.jpg\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/static.independent.co.uk\/2023\/09\/05\/10\/edf5ef232105e1feae811af23d4c3d4dY29udGVudHNlYXJjaGFwaSwxNjkzOTkwNTc1-2.73608479.jpg\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/static.independent.co.uk\/2022\/12\/20\/14\/YE_Sports_2022_88060.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>Argentina progressed on penalties against the Netherlands in the quarter-finals <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you see how Argentina gets the goals and how we get the goals, and how some Argentina players overstepped the mark and were not punished, then I think it all premeditated game.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean everything I say,\u201d he continued. \u201cThat Messi should become world champion? I think so, yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Having come out of retirement to take charge of the side for a third time &#8211; following the sacking of Frank de Boer &#8211; Van Gaal led his side out of the group before setting up a clash with Argentina following a 3-1 round-of-16 fixture against the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Nahuel Molina\u2019s first-half strike and Messi\u2019s 73rd-minute penalty had Argentina en course for a routine victory before substitute Wout Weghorst\u2019s dramatic last-gasp brace sent the game to extra-time with an equaliser in the 11th minute of injury time.<\/p>\n<p>In extra-time, tempers continued to flare with right-back Denzel Dumfries eventually shown red before the penalty shootout.
