Carlos Alcaraz put on another dominant display to book his spot in the quarter-finals of the US Open. The world No 1 saw off Matteo Arnaldi 6-3 6-3 6-4 in an hour and 57 minutes. He now has a tough test in the next round, facing either Jannik Sinner or Alexander Zverev.

Alcaraz was facing a new opponent in Arnaldi in their first meeting on the tour. The world No 61 became something of a surprise package at the US Open, upsetting Cameron Norrie to reach the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time in his young career.

The Italian had also previously branded himself a “little Novak Djokovic” and said he would try to make his match against Alcaraz a physical one. Arnaldi was able to stay with the top seed for the first five games before Alcaraz broke to lead 4-2.

The defending champion raced through the first set in just 32 minutes, leaving the Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd in awe with his stunning shot-making. And he continued to put on a show in the second set, breaking in the opening game with a passing shot winner.

And he was right not to worry, as the Spaniard broke on his third set point with his 17th winner of the match, sitting down with a 6-3 6-3 lead.

But the world No 61 suddenly sprung into life at the start of the third, breaking Alcaraz to love in the third game. The underdog had the support of the 23,000-strong crowd as he saved a break-back point in the next game but he eventually succumbed to the world No 1 and Alcaraz levelled at 2-2.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. But he couldn’t keep the top seed at bay for much longer and Alcaraz had triple match point in Arnaldi’s next service game.

He only needed one as the Italian misfired a ball, sending it short on his half of the court to gift his opponent the match. Alcaraz will now face either Jannik Sinner or Alexander Zverev in the quarter-final as the Spaniard gets to the business end of the tournament. And it will be a tough battle no matter who he faces.

At the same stage of the US Open 12 months ago, Alcaraz defeated Sinner in a five-hour-and-15-minute epic that set a record for the tournament’s latest finish at 2:50am. The world No 1 came through 6-3 6-7(7) 6-7(0) 7-5 6-3. Alcaraz and Sinner are split at 3-3 in their head-to-head and the Italian won their latest match in Miami.

Alcaraz has a losing 2-3 losing record against Zverev, although he defeated the world No 12 in their only meeting this year at the Madrid Open. The German beat Alcaraz in their only Grand Slam match – last year’s French Open quarter-final.
