Chelsea were reportedly offered the chance to sign Manchester United star Jadon Sancho as part of a swap deal in the summer, following his public falling out with Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag in the aftermath of their 3-1 defeat to Arsenal on Sunday. The Dutch boss insisted that the former Borussia Dortmund man had not been up to the required standard in training, a claim that the player has since adamantly refuted on social media.

When quizzed after the Red Devils’ defeat in north London on why Sancho was not involved, Ten Hag bluntly replied: “Jadon, on his performances in training we did not select him. You have to reach a level every day at Manchester United and we can make choices in the front line. So for this game he was not selected.”

However, Sancho took issue with the claim and immediately hit back on social media, writing: “Please don’t believe everything you read! I will not allow people saying things that is (sic) completely untrue, I have conducted myself in training very well this week.

“I believe there are other reasons for this matter that I won’t go into, l’ve been a scapegoat for a long time which isn’t fair! All I want to do is play football with a smile on my face and contribute to my team.

I will continue to fight for this badge no matter what!”

As tensions between Sancho and Ten Hag are visibly strained, Fabrizio Romano has now claimed that Chelsea were offered the opportunity to sign the ex-England man as part of a swap deal with Marc Cucurella – who United had targeted to help fill their void at left-back before landing Tottenham’s Sergio Reguilon.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you.
