Former Liverpool and Manchester United striker Michael Owen was left astounded at Kai Havertz in Arsenal’s 3-1 win over the Red Devils on Sunday, as his stuttering start to the season continued. The German has so far failed to make the desired immediate impact since his £65million summer transfer from Chelsea and continues to have his place in the Gunners’ team questioned, despite his side picking up all three points at the Emirates.

Havertz was brought off after 77 minutes for Fabio Vieira, before Arsenal scored two late goals to claim a thumping victory over their rivals thanks to Declan Rice and Gabriel Jesus, after captain Martin Odegaard had equalised from Marcus Rashford’s opener.

Once again, Havertz was deployed on the left of midfield and tasked with the job of providing support to striker Eddie Nketiah, but one moment in the match summed up his afternoon.

The ball fell to the 24-year-old inside the box with the goal gaping, but as he attempted to put his foot through the ball he spectacularly missed and kicked the air, as Lisandro Martinez was able to recover and clear the danger. Havertz’s head was in his hands in disbelief, with Owen reacting similarly as he could not believe what he had witnessed.

If the ball is shooting across at 100 miles per hour, then okay. But it was all calm and it was a beautiful touch. It was right in front of him. And he missed the ball! I mean, he missed the ball!? You just don’t see that. I haven’t seen that in years and years. He missed the ball! He is struggling for confidence, isn’t he?!”

Havertz has failed to find the target in the opening four Premier League games and without adding the necessary balance that his predecessor Granit Xhaka brought, questions have been posed over whether the Gunners made a costly mistake in the transfer window.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. In the end, she said yes, she wanted to be together and it was beautiful.

“If it is a yes on the first day, it is not that great. I think the crowd was really good with him today,” Arteta was then asked how he won over his wife, to which he replied: “Being persistent and determined!”
