Nico Rosberg has suggested that Charles Leclerc was wrong to stand by and comply after he gave team-mate and eventual polesitter Carlos Sainz the tow on two occasions during Q3 ahead of the Italian Grand Prix.

Leclerc eventually finished the session in P3, behind his Ferrari team-mate and the championship leader, Max Verstappen, although he was less than a tenth of a second behind Sainz’s pole time when the chequered flag waved on the session.

Playing the team game ultimately cost Leclerc, and while he will be delighted to see his team-mate give the loyal Tifosi something to shout about ahead of the Grand Prix, the Monegasque driver will secretly be envious of Sainz’s position.

Speaking to Sky Sports F1 after qualifying, Rosberg stated: “I remember that sometimes Fred [Vasseur] has these special views but in this case, I would say that it’s totally not correct. We know that the tow, if you get it right here it’s a huge help.

Click here to join our WhatsApp community to be the first to receive breaking and exclusive F1 news.

Don’t miss… Carlos Sainz accuses rival of trying to get him a penalty at Ferrari’s home race[LATEST]

“I think Charles Leclerc made a mistake on the internal politics there. It shouldn’t have been that he pulls Carlos two times in a row in Q3 on a track like Monza. He should have made sure before there that at least it’s one and one in the last part of qualiyfing. I think he made a big mistake there.”

The Monegasque driver will be aiming to make it four podiums this season when the lights go out on Sunday, but his chances of claiming a race win will rely solely on taking P2 from Verstappen on the run down to turn one on the opening lap.

Despite having claimed two pole positions and all of the Scuderia’s three podiums so far this season, Leclerc is trailing Sainz in the standings by three points following a DNF at the Dutch Grand Prix last time out.

More F1… We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. More info

Leclerc, while not delighted with P3, couldn’t hide his happiness for his team-mate in front of the Tifosi. He explained: “My feeling can only be amazing with the tifosi. On my side, I am a bit disappointed, I obviously wanted to be first.

“But seeing that Carlos is P1 is great for Ferrari, he has done an incredible job all weekend. Qualifying I managed to put everything together so I am really happy.

“We should be happy, especially on my side I have been struggling a lot. The (fans) are just incredible. I don’t smile often when I am P3 but when I have this support it is an amazing feeling.”
