Sloane Stephens won the battle of the last two US Open champions to beat Naomi Osaka 7-5 4-6 6-1 at the WTA Finals in Singapore.
American Stephens, the 2017 US Open champion, edged a fiercely competitive 51-minute first set.
That set alone produced no less than five breaks of serve as both players attacked each other aggressively.

Osaka levelled the Red Group match after enjoying two early breaks in the second set.
But the 2018 US Open champion from Japan was eventually overpowered as Stephens secured victory in two hours and 24 minutes.
Both players were making their competition debuts at the season-ending event in Singapore.
Osaka and Stephens are both US Open champions and are making their WTA Finals debuts
