No.4 seed Daniil Medvedev has won the Australian Open’s battle of the Russians, beating Andrey Rublev in straight sets 6-4, 7-5, 6-2 in the Rod Laver Arena heat on Wednesday afternoon.
After a tense first set, Medvedev pulled away in the second set and then broke early in the third to demoralise his No.7 seed opponent. Rublev looked physically and mentally spent for the majority of the final set.
A 112 km/h second serve in the third game of the third set illustrated Rublev’s depleted energy levels, and Medvedev broke again to take a 3-0 lead and make the final set a formality.

The 2019 US Open finalist said playing his good mate Rublev was a challenge.
“It’s never easy but we are all so competitive that during the matches you can see nothing matters. I think my game matches his quite well … I know how to neutralise his amazing shots,” he said.
“It was one of the best matches I played lately, maybe in the last year.”
“If we have a Russian final it’s going to be a dream come true.”
