Daniil Medvedev confesses to illegally streaming US Open on pirate websites

Daniil Medvedev has admitted to watching some US Open matches via ‘pirate websites’ due to them not being shown on TV at his hotel. The 27-year-old managed to book his place in the quarter-finals in New York by coming from a set down to beat Alex de Minaur in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Medvedev struggled to get going and paid the price by dropping the first set, with De Minaur starting well under the lights at the Louis Armstrong Stadium. The momentum changed hands in the second, though, with Medvedev never looking back as he breezed to a four-set victory.

The Russian was asked in his post-match press conference if he would be watching some of his rivals on Tuesday, with Novak Djokovic set to face Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton going up against fellow home favourite Frances Tiafoe. Medvedev responded by confessing that using ‘pirate websites’ will be his only option due to the lack of channels available at his hotel.

“I was waiting for this question because I guess in a lot of hotels they have Spectrum, I cannot watch it on TV anymore,” said Medvedev.

“I don’t know if it’s legal or illegal, but I have to find a way because I cannot watch it on TV. I got internet, probably this, how you call it, pirate websites, I watch tennis there. I have no other choice. But at the same time sometimes I do want to watch some series.

“Do I put it on the phone or not? I watched Djokovic with [Laslo] Djere until it was 2:30am and then I had to go to sleep. Probably I’m going to watch it if they don’t play too late, my phone, if Spectrum don’t find an agreement.”

Medvedev will renew his rivalry with compatriot Andrey Rublev in the US Open quarter-finals, with the latter having reached the last eight by beating Jack Draper in the previous round. The winner will go up against either Alexander Zverev or defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals, with Novak Djokovic likely to be awaiting them in the final.

The other quarter-final will see Ben Shelton face Frances Tiafoe for a place in the last four, with Medvedev set to keep a close eye on what will be the highest-profile clash between two American players in quite some time.

“Great guys, same generation, playing great,” he said. “Ben managed to win [against] Tommy [Paul], so he’s there, the third one. It’s going to be a great atmosphere, a great match, at least one American in the semis. Let’s see.”
