Carlos Alcaraz has already warned Novak Djokovic that he will be trying to stop him from winning the biggest titles next year. Djokovic’s 2023 season only came to an end on Saturday when Serbia was dumped out of the Davis Cup, while Alcaraz’s finished a week earlier with an ATP Finals defeat to the world No 1. But the 20-year-old is already setting his sights on putting an end to Djokovic’s dominance in 2024, claiming that a host of players are ready to beat him.
Alcaraz finished 2023 with a straight-set defeat to Djokovic in the semi-final of the ATP Finals – the most one-sided match of their rivalry so far. But there was no denying that the 20-year-old had an incredible season, winning six titles between February and July.
His trophy haul included his second Grand Slam crown at Wimbledon, where he became the first man in a decade to defeat Djokovic on Centre Court during a thrilling five-set final. It ended up being the only match that the Serb lost at a Major all year. And Alcaraz is now hoping that he can keep preventing the world No 1 from winning big trophies next year.
“He has shown that he is more than ready to win all four Grand Slams in 2024, but I am here to try to stop him,” the world No 2 said in a confident statement ahead of his exhibition match in Mexico on Wednesday.

Alcaraz also thought that some of his peers could step in to take down Djokovic, adding: “Me and the rest of the great players who are qualified to go and beat him.” The two-time Grand Slam champion doesn’t want to stop there and is also hungry to take home a medal for his nation in what would be his first-ever Olympic Games.
Looking ahead, the Spaniard continued: “I must grow next year. Realise that the season continues until November. I have worked with a psychologist who has helped me. 2024 will be a demanding year, with the Olympic Games after Wimbledon. I will work hard to give a medal to my country.”
Alcaraz doesn’t want to stop there, as he aims to cement his place as one of the sport’s greatest players. Following constant comparisons to Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, he added: “I try to concentrate on my career. My dream is to be considered one of the greatest in history.”

It comes after Djokovic admitted that he is eyeing all four Major trophies and an Olympic gold medal next season. After finishing 2023 with the year-end No 1 ranking, three more Grand Slams, a record-extending seventh ATP Finals crown, two more Masters trophies and an ATP 250 title in Adelaide, Djokovic was asked how he could do better.
“Well, you can win four slams and Olympic gold,” he smiled. “Let’s see. I mean, I have always the highest ambitions and goals. That’s not going to be different for the next year, that’s for sure. The drive that I have is still there.”
