Holger Rune’s mum has revealed that Boris Becker is behind Holger Rune’s decision to stop wearing his cap and necklaces on court. The pair started working together earlier this month and are already seeing immediate results, with the 20-year-old winning back-to-back matches for the first time since July. Rune has also caught attention at this week’s Swiss Indoors as he has been without his trademark cap, and it seems that it’s all part of Becker’s unusual coaching methods.
Becker recently took on his first coaching job since being released from prison last December and he is now working with world No 6 Rune. The Dane had been struggling for form after a positive start to the season and between Wimbledon and this week’s Swiss Indoors, he went 1-6 in matches.
The six-time Grand Slam champion’s influence already seems to be working as Rune is now through to the quarter-final after winning his first two matches in Basel. But there has been another talking point about the top seed’s run this week. That’s because he took off his cap during his opening match and hasn’t worn it since.
While Rune brushed it off and said it was too hot to wear a hat inside, his mother and agent Aneke said that the 20-year-old should actually credit Becker for the change. “Holger has tinkered with it every now and then, but Boris himself felt that way when he was playing, that the less things that interfered, the better,” she told BT.

“So no caps, necklaces and so on. Maybe Holger could nod in recognition to that.” It’s an unusual coaching method but one that is having the desired effect, with Rune recording his best result since reaching the Wimbledon quarter-final more than three months ago.
The four-time title winner had a slightly different explanation for his decision not to wear a cap, however, also joking that he still wanted to have hair when he was older. “It’s a good question,” Rune smiled when he was asked where his cap had gone.

“For those that don’t know, it’s extremely hot in this arena. So yesterday after the first set it was like, I was sweating a lot and I had to control it all the time so why not, let’s play without it and see what happens. It’s not that I’m superstitious but it’s working pretty well. It’s good to get some air for the hair as well if you want to have some hair when you’re 50.”
Although he didn’t credit Becker for stopping him from wearing caps and necklaces, the 20-year-old did pay tribute to his new coach when he discussed his impressive 7-6(2) 6-1 win over Sebastian Baez. The top seed in Basel added: “It’s great to have Boris on the side, giving me advice. I was serving extremely well today. You know, it isn’t a secret where that might come from. But I’m happy with how I handled the situation.”
