Andy Murray smashes racket and fumes at camera operator in sickening defeat

Andy Murray says he has ‘a retirement date in mind’ ahead of Wimbledon

Andy Murray was visibly frustrated and appeared frosty to one camera operator that he deemed to be in his way as he attempted to exit the court after defeat to Alex de Minaur, following his explosive moment on court that saw the Brit smash his racket. The Australian defeated Murray 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 and kept up his perfect record against the 36-year-old, who had a golden opportunity to get one over on his rival.

Murray had three match points but could not convert any of them, as De Minaur showed a similar grit that Murray has been praised for over the years to claim a hard-fought victory.

The Australian trailed 2-5 in the deciding set, but refused to back down and saved two match points on serve at 2-5 and one more at 5-6 in the tie-break to advance after nearly three hours of play in China.

Especially in the third set, Murray’s temper was there for all to see as he repeatedly took his frustration out on his own racket including one smash into the surface, though he did avoid any violations during the match.

After shaking hands with his opponent and the official, a disappointed Murray was extremely eager to get off the court as he appeared to have asked a camera operator to “move” before exiting in a cold manner.

De Minaur has now beaten Murray on each of their last five occasions, putting him in elite company as the only three players before him to do so are Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

Having been aware of De Minaur’s stellar record over Murray that can only be matched by the ‘Big Three’, the veteran admitted that he had been looking at specifically what he needs to do differently in order to break his duck.

“Last couple of matches with him have obviously, yeah, been pretty one-sided,” Murray said in the build-up to the tournament. “If I do come up against him in a couple of weeks, I will obviously need to look at that and see what I can do differently.”

But he was unable to make those required adjustments and instead, the world No 12 will next face second seed Daniil Medvedev or Tommy Paul in the second round after his battling victory over Murray.
