Alexander Zverev explains Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal shock with Roger Federer warning

Alexander Zverev has expressed his shock at Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal being knocked out of the group stages.

The young German also fired a warning to Roger Federer that the Next Gen stars are ready for the changing of the guard.

World No 1 Nadal failed to make it out of the group stages at the O2 Arena despite only losing one of his three round-robin ties.

Meanwhile, Djokovic lost his decisive match against Roger Federer meaning only one of the big three are through to the semi-finals.

And Zverev puts that down to the younger players stepping up to the mark.

“I think it’s been not a strange tournament, but the young guys have been playing much better tennis than they were maybe last year,” Zverev said.

“I think the biggest surprise is actually that Novak is out of the tournament, because I think for him, this court, the conditions is the best fit for his game.

“The other thing is the biggest surprise, obviously Rafa. Nobody expected him to be out from our group.

“Our group was very, very difficult, and for me and Stefanos [Tsitsipas] to qualify, I don’t think a lot of people would have picked, you know, especially probably me with the year I had. But we played good tennis over the last five days, so that helped us.”

Zverev takes on Dominic Thiem in his semi-final at 8pm tonight.

But first 21-year-old Stefanos Tsitsipas will attempt to upset 20-time Grand Slam winner Federer.

“The tournament is still not over. It’s going to be interesting to see who will be the winner,” Zverev added.

“Maybe we’ll have the oldest winner of all time. Maybe it’s going to be one of the new guys, young guys.

“Maybe we’ll have a first-time winner. We’ll see how it goes.

“I hope it will be a back-to-back for me, but I have a very difficult semi-final . So far it’s a very, very interesting tournament, I think.”
